Limited to 5 last days
NIT here we come...
So it's the National Invitation Tournament for the Miami Hurricanes, who drew the four seed in the 32-team showdown.
They'll play the No. 5-seeded Providence Friars on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (ET). The game will be at Providence, as word is the BankUnited Center is booked that day. The game will air on ESPN2.
The winner will play the winner of the 1-8 matchup between Florida and Jacksonville. A Canes-Gators matchup on the hardcourt would be an interesting one as it doesn't happen often, and it'd be two teams that had NCAA hopes until late in the season.
I'll keep you updated should we travel to any of the games. Otherwise, enjoy seeing Jack McClinton and the seniors at least one, hopefully five, more times.
Photos from today's 65-47 Miami loss to Virginia Tech
A day that started with NCAA optimism ended with a quick letdown and NIT aspirations. Here are some photos from the game:
Jack McClinton warming up.
Unfortunately, this was about as hot as he'd get all day with Virginia Tech's defense in his face. He finished 1-of-6 from three and 4-of-11 overall.
Jimmy Graham going up for a dunk.
McClinton on a breakaway...
...And the pull-up J is good.
Lance Hurdle listening to some timeout instruction.
A.D. Vassallo, the Canes' nemesis. He only had 14 points and eight rebounds today, but the Hokies didn't need him. Good luck (and good riddance) in the Draft. If that whole, getting-caught-stealing-Dr.-Pepper thing doesn't come back to haunt you.
Jack's a lot better looking when he takes after his ma and smiles.
Lance Hurdle falling back on defense. He finished with three points on 1-of-9 shooting but with seven of the Hurricanes' nine assists.
McClinton looking to drive on Malcolm Delaney.
Jimmy looking dejected after a missed free-throw. He missed all of his four attempts and finished with four points.
...Which means you know how this one turns out. At least Malcolm Delaney is smiling, otherwise these would all be depressing.
Coach Frank Haith wondering what he can do to get his team back in the game.
Jack McClinton and the boys looking down. Jack sat the last four minutes of the game knowing there was nothing he could do, down 19 at that point.
The team walking off, with DeQuan Jones in the middle. For you, there's always next year.
Jimmy Graham walking to the locker room, looking somber. Don't let today detract from a solid career marked by constant effort.
Hopefully not the last we'll see of Jack McClinton in a Miami Hurricanes jersey. Barring something crazy on Sunday, bring on the NIT.
Miami falls to Virginia Tech, 65-47
Miami was unable to overcome a 14-0 Virginia Tech run late in the second half and was eliminated from the ACC Tournament in the first round.
For a team that lives and dies by the three-pointer, Miami shot 6-of-24 (25 percent) from long range.
Jack McClinton finished with nine points on 1-of-6 shooting from three-point range. More importantly, he turned the ball over seven times.
It was the Virginia Tech defense that sunk the Canes for the second ACC Tournament in a row, holding the Canes to 34.6 percent shooting overall.
Miami held Malcolm Delaney to 1-of-10 shooting but Miami's second-half foul trouble allowed him to go to the line 15 times. He finished with a game-high 17 points.
Miami 40-Virginia Tech 57, 6:34 left in second half
Virginia Tech just finished a 12-0 run to extend its lead to a game-high 20 points before Brian Asbury's three-pointer.
The Hurricanes just haven't had any offensive success, particularly from the outside. Jack McClinton has nine points but has only really been effective when he drives.
It's getting late, the Canes will need to show some desire soon or it's over.
Miami 24-Virginia Tech 28, halftime
Adrian Thomas hit two three-pointers and Jack McClinton hit his first three to pull the Canes within four with a minute remaining in the first half, but Thomas wasn't able to convert on a one-and-one attempt with :03 remaining to make it a one-possession game at half.
But the Canes' 11-4 run to close out the half showed some of the offense that we've seen all year, as opposed to what they showed in the first 16 minutes of the half.
Jeff Allen leads the Hokies with eight points and Malcolm Delaney has seven.
Miami 15-Virginia Tech 24, 3:15 left first half
Miami is on a 7-2 run in the last three minutes but the lead remains at nine for the Hokies.
Jack McClinton just scored his first basket on a runner in the lane but has three turnovers by my count and is frustrated.
Miami needs to figure out how to score on this Tech defense. They scored 49 points against this team in last year's tournament and will need a hot second half if they want to win.
Miami 8-Virginia Tech 18, 9:58 left first half
Malcolm Delaney leads the Hokies with seven points and Virginia Tech is shooting well from three.
Cyrus McGowan leads the Hurricanes with two dunks and Jack McClinton has been absent as he's often getting double-teamed. McGowan just took a charge but the Canes will need a strong second 10 minutes to make it close at half.
Gameday
It's about 30 minutes before tipoff and the teams are off the buses.
Jack McClinton looks ready to drop 30, and A.D. Vassallo looks like he wants to go back to bed.
OK, maybe I can't tell either of those things from them getting off a bus, but still.
I'll be updating throughout the game but for now, here's a teaser.
